A ring rampart castle is a cirque-shaped site surrounded by an earthen rampart lined with sod and an often wide moat. Burch originated around a ring rampart castle raised against the Normans in the late ninth century. Presumably it was built by local rulers or monastic orders. Many questions surrounding the ring wall fortresses in Zeeland remain unanswered. But the reconstruction of the ringwalburg in Burgh now gives a nice picture of the defensive works of a ringwalburg. You can learn more about ringwalled castles at the Museum De Burghse Schoole.
