Hooge Platen

In the mouth of the Western Scheldt estuary lies an 1800 ha large mudflat and salt marsh area: the Hooge Platen. Large colonies of shorebirds such as little terns, common terns and sandwich terns nest here. Black-headed gulls, Kentish plovers and avocets also like to nest here. Seals rest on the banks and nurse their young.
