The Scheldt estuary has always been a naturally dynamic area, where the interaction between man and geology has shaped the contemporary landscape. The influence of sea and rivers has provided the geological basis, which is directly responsible for the varied landscape character of the Geopark. In addition, geology is also the cause of a diverse range of species and habitats to be found. Many areas in the Geopark have been designated as Natura 2000 areas. Only landscapes with special rarity and exceptional flora and fauna are part of this network. In this network, certain animals, plants and their natural habitats are protected to preserve biodiversity (species protection and area protection). Sustainable protection of flora and fauna is badly needed. With this European program, we can prevent nature in Europe from becoming more and more of the same. But protecting and conserving the landscape is not only a task of governments and local authorities; each of us can make a difference!
