Middelburg Abbey

In the center of Middelburg lies a place where history lingers in every stone: the monumental abbey, built in the 12th century by the Norbertines. What began as a monastic complex evolved into the beating heart of Zeeland.

Over the centuries, the abbey’s buildings took on many roles: a cannon foundry, mint, and concert hall. Today, the buidlings are home to the Provincial Council in the stately Assembly Hall. The past is still tangible in the vaults, towers, and serene courtyards. You can feel it everywhere.

What this place tells us about the Geopark

Middelburg Abbey reflects the essence of Zeeland: built on higher ground, it grew into a spiritual and administrative heart of the region. The abbey shows how religion, governance, craftsmanship, and culture are deeply rooted in the delta’s landscape. It also reveals how people have shaped, managed, and given meaning to this landscape through the centuries.
