Excursion in the Drowned Land of Saeftinghe

At the very tip of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen lies the Drowned Land of Saeftinghe. This vast and wild salt marsh area is still ruled by tides, wind, and water. During a guided tour, you explore a world normally off-limits: soggy creeks, slippery mudflats, and bird-rich plains.

Together with an experienced guide, you experience Europe’s largest brackish-water marsh from the inside. You’ll learn about the role of the tides, the influence of the Scheldt, the unique flora (such as glasswort and sea lavender), and the dramatic history of drowned villages and lost land.

What this place tells us about the Geopark

Saeftinghe is a textbook example of a dynamic delta landscape. Here you can see how land disappears, returns, and lives in an endless rhythm of growth and erosion. It is a place of natural richness, but also of human memory of villages, dikes, and floods.
