History

Construction of the water tower began in 1938 and the tower was commissioned in 1940. Although barely 10 meters high, this building could store 400,000 liters of water. On August 11, 2010, the municipality of Rumst took over the structure from drinking water company Pidpa. The water tower has been transformed into a tourist-educational information point and offers a panoramic view of the clay pits between Rumst and Boom.

Architectural value

Water towers exist in very different forms. This tower differs from the common model in which a round tub is placed on a pedestal. The natural height on the Boom clay ridge made the construction of a pedestal unnecessary. With its cubist design and large masonry sections, this water tower is an example of interwar architecture from the 1940s.

New destination

The water tower offers a beautiful view over the Rupel region and beyond. Above all, the tower offers a beautiful view of the current clay mining activities. In and on the tower you can find information about the clay and the Rupel, which are so important for the region. You will also get to know the unique fauna and flora of the area and of course the former function of the water tower.

This redevelopment is an initiative of the municipality of Rumst with the support of a number of partners.
