A landscape full of stories awaits you in the Zwin region.

Anyone who has ever walked through Bruges can see history in every cobblestone. In the Middle Ages, Bruges was a thriving port city, connected to the sea through bustling trade routes. The Zwin region was once a wild sea inlet, where ships came and went and the wind swept freely across dunes and salt marshes. But nature and humans played a centuries-long game here, slowly transforming the region from open sea into fertile polder land. Dikes were built, cities flourished, and the landscape kept adapting time and again. Today, that history can still be felt in the salty air and the open landscapes. As part of Geopark Schelde Delta, the Zwin Landscape Park brings these stories to life and invites you to experience them yourself.

Water is the driving force behind the Zwin region. For centuries, the landscape has adapted to the ebb and flow of the sea. Today, mudflats, salt marshes, and vast polders alternate, each with its inhabitants. Avocets and spoonbills forage in the shallow waters, while migratory birds rest in the marshes during their long journeys. The interplay between fresh and salt water creates a rich ecosystem that is constantly in motion.

The park focuses on innovative water management to counter climate change and salinization. This is done in close cooperation with a wide network of partners, including nature organizations, farmers, and water managers. Through smart water storage, natural water buffers, and the restoration of creeks and channels, the landscape becomes more resilient and the delicate balance between fresh and salt is preserved. Thanks to these joint efforts, the Zwin region is made future-proof.

A storytelling landscape

The Zwin region is an open-air history book. From the vanished Zwin harbors to the military defense lines that guarded the border for centuries, every dike and creek bears traces of the past. Channels, mudflats, and ancient trade routes laid the foundation for villages and forts. Some relics, such as old harbor canals and fortifications, are still visible today, while others lie underground as archaeological treasures.

The State-Spanish Lines, a network of fortifications from the 16th and 17th centuries, testify to the long-lasting struggle for this border region. Built by the Spanish, these lines were designed to control strategic routes and block enemy troops. Together with old windmills and historic towns like Sluis and Damme, they let you wander through centuries of trade, warfare, and innovation. Thanks to a wide partner network, the past is not only preserved but also made accessible through walking and cycling routes, VR experiences, and heritage projects.
