Water is the driving force behind the Zwin region. For centuries, the landscape has adapted to the ebb and flow of the sea. Today, mudflats, salt marshes, and vast polders alternate, each with its inhabitants. Avocets and spoonbills forage in the shallow waters, while migratory birds rest in the marshes during their long journeys. The interplay between fresh and salt water creates a rich ecosystem that is constantly in motion.
The park focuses on innovative water management to counter climate change and salinization. This is done in close cooperation with a wide network of partners, including nature organizations, farmers, and water managers. Through smart water storage, natural water buffers, and the restoration of creeks and channels, the landscape becomes more resilient and the delicate balance between fresh and salt is preserved. Thanks to these joint efforts, the Zwin region is made future-proof.
