Active dune formation takes place in this area. Rare plants grow in the dunes, such as the greennose orchid and the white-flowering Parnassus. On the beach, birds such as the Kentish plover, the Great Ringed Plover and the Little Tern nest. Adjacent to this are the “vroon”grounds: species-rich grasslands where people grazed their cattle for centuries.
