Ring rampart castle Oost-Souburg

A ringwalburg is a cirque-shaped site surrounded by an earthen wall lined with sod and an often wide moat. Souburg originated around a Carolingian ring walburg. Presumably it was built by local rulers or monastic orders as a place of refuge for residents against Viking raids. Many questions surrounding the ring wall fortresses in Zeeland remain unanswered. But the reconstruction of the ring rampart castle in Burgh now gives a nice picture of the defensive works of a ring rampart castle. You can take a nice walk from the Museum De Burgshe Schoole along an ancient path that runs across this protected archaeological monument.
