Fort de Roovere

In 1628, the States General of Zeeland and Holland thought it had been enough. The Spaniards had already plundered and captured the fortified town of Steenbergen several times, and now they were coming dangerously close to the fortified town of Bergen op Zoom as well! The Dutch flooded the land and built forts to stop them. Thus was formed the West Brabant Water Line, which is now part of the Zuiderwaterlinie. Part of this was Fort de Roovere, on a high sand ridge near Halsteren. Fort de Roovere stopped not only the Spanish, but later also the French and Belgians.
