Fort Rammekens

Fort Rammekens is the oldest sea fort in Western Europe on the Western Scheldt near Ritthem. Many people left their mark; Spanish military, English mercenaries, Dutch Sea Beggars, Zeelandic, East and especially West Indiamen, German soldiers and French revolutionaries. You enter through a meter-high, thick, heavy, wooden door and can wander around the casemates, half bastions, main bastion and former powder rooms. From the fort you have a beautiful view of the Western Scheldt and Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.
