Liberation Museum Zeeland

The Zeeland Liberation Museum tells the powerful story of the province of Zeeland during the Second World War. At its heart is the Battle of the Scheldt, a fierce and strategically vital conflict fought in the autumn of 1944.

Allied and German forces battled for control over the Western Scheldt, the gateway to the already liberated port of Antwerp. Geology, soil composition, and water management played a decisive role: flooded polders, clay soils, dikes, and creeks shaped the battlefield.

Through authentic objects, personal stories, scale models and historical footage, the museum immerses you in the lived experiences of both civilians and soldiers, above and below the Zeeland soil.

Practical information

Wat this place tells us about the Geopark

The Battle of the Scheldt shows how the landscape itself became a player in the war: the fighting took place across dikes, through polders, and in creeks. The museum reveals how the geography of the delta made the difference between delay and breakthrough.
